A fairly recent development took place in 1999 with the arrival of speedway to the Highbridge area, previous to this and some while ago the nearest speedway would probably have been at Bristol with “The Bristol Bulldogs”
So for many people in this area of Somerset, there was excitement and anticipation at the thought of speedway being established in the locality.
The “Oak Tree Arena” was built just off the Bristol Road, heading towards the Edithmead roundabout, it was opened in 1999 and the first action was watched by an estimated crowd of nearly 2000 spectators some of whom had travelled some considerable distance to get involved again with speedway. The team who raced under the name “Somerset Rebels” gathered riders from various parts of the country and with the crowds in the first three years averaging 1200; it soon became the top sporting attraction in the Sedgemoor area. Now as action moves into the 2004 season home matches on a Friday evening continue, the club is established and the track itself has become a popular venue praised by many of the visiting riders.
